Canyonlands Overlook

28"x24" pastel

We rode our bicycles seven miles over soft vermillion sand and slickrock in the heat of the day to reach the Colorado River overlook. In our hot exhaustion having finally reached the rim, we perched, breathlessly taking in the sight with amazement….. a thousand feet into a deep canyon of ancient layers, holding within it a ribbon of moving water, ochre-olive with silt. We might as well have been sitting in the sky looking down at a vast world of kaleidescope rock.Seven miles was nothing to endure compared to this eternal edge of earth.

Beauty All Around, Canyon de Chelly

30"x40" oil on linen

The spring Chinle wash greens everything in the valley as it meanders through giant corridors of red rock cliff. I’m painting on the very edge of this canyon looking down at ploughed fields, horses grazing and a hogan, miniature with distance.

While looking down into this paradise of lush desert, gusts of May winds keep me holding onto my easle in case we should all be blown over the rim!

After Sunset, Waxing Moon

20"x30" oil on canvas

Blue chairs for watching
Golden light on the mountains,
Sit empty after sunset hour,
Under the waxing moonrise.
As if one kind of luminous magic
Transforms into another,
And cannot be kept still.

Light on the Rio Grande

11" x 14" oil on board

On this autumn day
Late in the afternoon,
The river is pure liquid light
And the canyon walls are backlit
With a sky of dancing cloud streaks.
